The study aims to comprehensively analyse the working conditions of waste pickers in South America, identifying the main occupational safety risks they face and assessing existing strategies and policies to improve their protection. It examines the relationship between occupational hazards and lack of PPE, considering factors such as discomfort and lack of training. It explores the regulatory framework in South America and advocates for preventive measures and regulations. The methodology is based on a review of scientific literature on the working conditions of waste pickers. It addresses working conditions in the region, identifying occupational hazards such as exposure to chemical, biological and physical agents, accidents, overexertion and precariousness. The results underline the importance of waste pickers' health, highlighting hazards such as lack of access to medical care. It is proposed to invest in training and safety programmes.
